Peconic, NY June 6, 2007 – Catapano Dairy Farm, located in Peconic NY, has decided to implement solar technology to produce electricity and also to heat the water at their farm. Owners Michael and Karen Catapano decided to act on an interest that they have had for a long time by hiring SunStream USA, LLC to make the change to using renewable energy technologies.

“By utilizing renewable energy products such as solar electric and solar hot water systems, the Catapanos will be making a change that will not only help them save extraordinary amounts of money in the long term on their utility bills, but they will be playing a crucial role in protecting the natural environment,” states Brian Tymann, SunStream’s Director of Operations.

The farm currently produces award winning goat cheese, amongst many other products containing goat milk, such as soaps and other skin care products, fudge, and yogurt. In 2005 the American Cheese Society granted the Catapanos the first place award for their Chevre Cheese, which is a great honor from a prestigious organization.

As with most any other business, the cheese making process consumes energy. Water needs to be heated to create steam, and electricity is used for many reasons as well. So, the Catapanos did what seemed logical – they called a renewable energy company and committed to adding the largest solar electric system size that LIPA offers a rebate for, as well as a water heating system using solar panels.

The cost of the installation is being offset by LIPA through their Solar Pioneer Program, as well as by tax credits. Together, these incentives have reduced the system installation cost by approximately 60%, insuring a great return on the Catapanos investment.
